Definition

Careful consideration of numerous phenomena appearing in the living world let us comprehend the existence of a special field that is not limited only to living organisms but nevertheless plays a vital part inside the living creatures. It is so-called biofield. Despite diverse efforts of many international research groups it has still not been made completely clear what the biofield is. There have been three most grounded and credible hypotheses:

  1. it is an endogenous, partly coherent electromagnetic (EM) field of organisms (Burr H.S., Northrop F.S.C. 1935. The electrodynamic theory of life.   2. it is an emergent field - field emerging from classical cellular fields of certain organism, but obtains some new characteristics,
  3. it is a field complementary to EM (so-called magnetoelectric field or ME field) being a result of special symmetrical demands in physics (so-called SU2 symmetry). Function

Biofield is supposed to restore long-range connection between molecular and supra-molecular processes creating the order that could exceed Brownian motion. The latter enables joint functioning of molecules in case of liquid medium, for example content of the cells (cytoplasm). Biofield should take care of morphogenesis in multicellular organisms. That is why it is often regarded as morphogenetic field. Many morphogenetic processes actually remind us of the way dynamic fields tend to function.

Connection to living organisms and nonliving materials

In case of second hypothesis claiming that biofield is an emergent field it only deals with living organisms. Other two hypotheses do not distinguish between living organisms and nonliving materials since biofield is supposed to be the characteristic of both. They call it subtle field. Theory about endogenous coherent electromagnetic field talks about the field found in a liquid medium, in water for example. It can be theoretically based on quantum field theory and co-called Bose condensation.

Field emerging from symmetrical physical demands also characterizes the whole nature: living and nonliving; only that in living nature it can be expressed in a more complex ways. Like in case of endogenous coherent oscillations biofield can be connected with high energy of electric field on a membrane (~ 107V/m!). Endogenous coherent electromagnetic field connected to polar molecules inside of cells can be the source of biofield in case of oscillations, and can enable its expression in case of magnetoelectric fields.

Biofield and consciousness

Researchers of biofield, especially those inclined to the third hypothesis, think that biofield can be the source of intelligence and conscious mind due to its integrative abilities (go to coherence of the biofield) and at least partial inability to be localized. It can be a cause of subtle decisions in case of physical (energy) equivalent states and integration of numerous electric agitations leading to one mental picture - conscious image of an object.

Biofield coherence

Biofield coincides, as we have already said, at least in one of its possible varieties with the field of coherent endogenous oscillations that were first determined by physic Herbert Fröhlich in his theory of coherent oscillations. Coherence has been one of the most important factors to determine explicitly non-linear sensitivity of organisms to weak ionized and non-ionized electromagnetic fields or complex magnetic fields that can not be ascribed as the consequences of heat. 

Nowadays we have got many ways to confirm existence of coherent polar vibrations through various experiments; the roles of such vibrations inside the cells have been supported by direct and indirect measurements of electromagnetic field as well as mechanical vibrations of cell membrane. Many of the experiments carried out in the field of so-called have ultra weak bioluminescence have proven that photons get incorporated via other photons in coherent states inside the living organism and if stimulated they get spread (
Popp F.A., Chang, J.J. et al. 2002. Evidence of non-classical (squeezed) light in biological systems. Physics Letters A, 293, 98-102).

Biofield's non-locality

Biological non-locality was first confirmed by experiment in 1994 (Grinberg-Zylberbaum, G., Delaflor, M., Attie, L., Goswami, A. 1994. The Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox in the brain: the transferred potential. Phys. Essays 7, 422-428) and eventually repeated several times. Non-locality is a quantum characteristic of a key importance for understanding the biofield. Scientists stimulated a human subject inside the Faraday cage using the light and caused some visual potential inside the electroencephalogram (EEG). In another Faraday's cage at one meter distance second human subject was also exposed to EEG tests. They found out that when they photo-stimulated the first one the second one also experienced stimulation activities in the brain. Lately electric correlations have also been proven in case of isolated neuron cells. The transmission of information/energy has happened instantly and has not been limited by distance.

According to Thaheld the field of zero mass photon as well as electron which mass is less than one thousandth of that of the smallest atom can not be localized because non-locality is not limited by the mass of a particle (Thaheld F.H. 2005. An interdisciplinary approach to certain fundamental issues in the ?elds of physics and biology: towards a uni?ed theory. BioSystems, 80: 41-56). It means that mechanism of distributing the biofield throughout the whole body or so-called holism (alternative medicine often uses this term) is directly connected with still unknown mechanism of EEG correlations.

The effects of biofield

Biofield is non-local and (at least partially) coherent. Obviously it does not perform any brutal interventions inside the body from the macroscopic point of view but it interferes with body's vibrations and modifies body's EM field. It influences the physical matter using electromagnetic and above all strong electric field found at every living cell's membrane. It means that qualitative and quantitative changes of biofield in a body can change level of certain gradients, calcium, cAMP or hormones for example. It influences the distribution of electric or ionic currents, strength and density of electric field, quantity of biophotons or mechanic force field.
